🎓 Accelerated BS/MS Aerospace Pathways ▼

In aerospace, an advanced degree increasingly opens the best design and research roles — and several schools on Alex's list let him start that master's before he ever leaves undergrad.

University of Michigan — SUGS. The Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Study program lets Alex count graduate credits toward both degrees and finish a BS + MS in roughly five years. At a top-five aerospace department, that's a serious head start.
Purdue — Combined BS/MS. Purdue's combined-degree route in aeronautics and astronautics shaves a full year off the traditional two-degree timeline. Worth asking about directly during the STEP visit July 5–11.
Penn State — Integrated Undergraduate/Graduate (IUG). Penn State's IUG in aerospace engineering is built for exactly this — one continuous five-year path to the master's.
Virginia Tech — Accelerated UG/Grad. VT offers an accelerated pathway that carries strong undergraduates straight into its graduate aerospace program.

The takeaway: if Alex knows he wants the master's — and in aerospace, he probably will — these four schools let him bank it early. Put "tell me about your accelerated BS/MS options" on his list of questions for every info session.

🔬 Honors Colleges & Undergraduate Research ▼

The single biggest differentiator in an aerospace undergrad is how early you get your hands on real hardware. Honors colleges and undergraduate research labs are how Alex gets there.

Purdue Honors College and Penn State Schreyer Honors College are among the most respected in the country — smaller classes, priority research placement, and honors housing inside a big-school program.
Michigan puts undergraduates on real projects fast — the Michigan Exploration Lab literally builds and launches student satellites.
CU Boulder, Oklahoma, and Kansas all offer honors programs that pair Alex with faculty mentors and research early — a strong way to stand out at a larger public.
Hands-on where it counts: Virginia Tech's rocketry and design-build-fly teams and Iowa State's flight simulator and UAV labs are exactly the kind of real-systems work that turns into internships and essays.

The takeaway: Alex should judge each school less on its ranking and more on one question — how soon can I get into a lab, a wind tunnel, or a rocket team? On his list, the answer is "very soon" almost everywhere.

💰 Merit Scholarships (Out-of-State) ▼

Alex is a Texas resident, so nearly every school here is out-of-state — and the cost figures on the map reflect in-state published costs. His real sticker price runs higher. The good news: a 1400 SAT and a strong GPA put him squarely in automatic-merit territory at several schools.

Best automatic merit for his profile: Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa State all offer generous, largely automatic non-resident scholarships that can pull his net cost back down toward in-state levels. This is how a "safety" quietly becomes the smart financial choice.
Competitive merit (separate application): Penn State and CU Boulder offer merit, but more of it is competitive rather than automatic — worth applying early.
Pay-for-prestige: Michigan and Purdue give little automatic merit to out-of-state students. Those are choices Alex and his family would make for the program and name, not the price.

The takeaway: don't read the map's cost numbers as final. For a strong out-of-state applicant, merit can swing the real cost by tens of thousands of dollars — and it's often the safeties that come back with the best offers.

📋 Test Score Strategy — Submitting Your 1400 ▼

Alex is done with the SAT — a 1350 in June (700 Math) brings his superscore to 1400. Here's how that number plays across the list.

WPI — don't bother, it's test-blind. WPI will not look at his score at all. His GPA, rigor, and project portfolio are the entire application here.
Submit everywhere else — it helps. A 1400 sits at or above the 25th percentile at CU Boulder, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Purdue, Oklahoma, Iowa State, and Kansas. Submitting strengthens the app and often triggers merit money.
Michigan — submit, but lean on the story. At a top-five reach, a 1400 clears the bar but doesn't wow. Here, the essay, the course rigor, and his personal Michigan history do the heavy lifting.

The rule: submit your score anywhere you're at or above the school's 25th percentile — and Alex clears that bar essentially everywhere it's read.

700 on the math — the exact number we'd been chasing since March. Alex got there on his own, self-studying over the spring. Testing is closed. Full focus now goes to essays and applications.
